THAI PBS JOINS HANDS WITH IUCN TO PROMOTE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

January 7, 2013 - Mr. Somchai Suwanban, Director General of Thai Public Broadcasting Service (Thai PBS) and Mr. Anothai Udomsilp, Director of Academic Institute of Public Media welcomed Ms. Julia Marton-Lefèvre, Director General, and representatives of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) at Thai PBS Headquarters on Viphavadi Rangsit Road to discuss on collaborative projects to promote nature and environment conservation.

After having signed the MoU on academic cooperation and media production on the subject of environmental protection at The 5th World Conservation Congress in September 2012, Thai PBS and IUCN have undertaken a number of initiatives to raise awareness on environmental issues, while enhancing the understanding and capacity of news and program personnel in reporting conservation-related matters.

Upon the successful meeting, Thai PBS and IUCN agree to get several projects off the ground; one of the urgent topics is the climate change. A workshop on how such issue affects the world’s food security is expected to take place at the end of April 2013, following by the Coastal Forum in Vietnam in September. The workshop participants from Thai PBS news and program sectors will perform a comprehensive survey in some real affected areas in Eastern Thailand and present the findings at the Coastal Forum where representatives from government agencies, civil society, local communities and experts gather annually to build coastal resilience in Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam.

Thai PBS also arranges to broadcast the IUCN’s in-depth documentary about Mekong hydropower development and its effects on people living on the river basin. The program, which was filmed in four countries and recorded in English and local languages, is scheduled to be aired on April 8, 2013 along with side-event discussion on the above topic.

In addition, Thai PBS promises to support IUCN Creative Writing Workshop set up in April this year at Cambodia and Vietnam by providing an expert on news writing to assist IUCN officers from both countries in improving their written communication skills.

The two partners also plan on further collaborative activities including a transnational bike rally from Bangkok to Vietnam to campaign for energy saving and climate change awareness.
